Spiny lizard (Sceloporus magister)Spiny lizard

Widespread throughout Arizona, spiny lizards live in trees, packrat nests, wood piles and rocks; they may also be found amid yuccas and large cholla cacti where they tread with impunity among the prickles. They feed mainly on caterpillars, spiders, beetles, ants, smaller lizards and plants. They are active during the day and mate in spring and summer, laying clutches of 2-12 eggs.
